This is a useful resource that provides details and evaluation of programs that were run in rural Australia by different organisations. It was compiled by the Australian Centre For Agricultural Health And Safety.
Its value lises in providing a brief sumary of a variety of different interventions, some of which demonstrated evidence for success and some which showed a lower level of behavioural change.
The twelve programs are:
- 10 000 Steps Rockhampton
- Dorrigo Active Community Project 2003
- Foundation 49 – Decades of life health assessment program
- Greater Green Triangle Diabetes Prevention Project
- Go For Your Life Diabetes Prevention Program
- Healthy Men Ballarat
- Heart Foundation Walking
- Heartmoves
- Men’s Shed
- Pit Stop
- Sustainable Farm Families
- WellingTONNE Challenge
The challenge remains as to how to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs mentioned. In many cases, there is in fact mixed evidence as to each program's success. In some cases the projects reported initial successes but if the messages reverted back to purely behaviourist approaches in follow-up GP sessions, then their impact was short-lived.
Value For Services and Practitioners
The summary provides a basic overview of past projects and insights into the kind of practices that could be effective. Many of the programs indicate how difficult it is to evaluate behavioural changes in the context of specific campaigns.
It is recommended that services make follow up enquiries with each programs for more details.
