Amsler Test For Macular Degeneration

Rotary VEI AmslerGrid 1 Rotary International and Vision Eye Institute have partnered to develop and promote the Amsler Test, an easy to use tool that provides a basic test for early onset macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness among people over 50 years of age.

Also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD, ARMD), it involves the loss of vision needed to read, drive and recognise faces.

There are two types - wet and dry. At this stage, there are a number of treatments available to slow down (and in some cases, reverse) the effects of wet macular degeneration.

Currently, there are no treatments for dry macular degeneration.

Early detection and treatment of wet macular degeneration is crucial. Have eye examinations;every two years, and place this Amsler Grid on your fridge so you can self-test weekly. Lifestyle changes can reduce the risk.

The following actions from large research studies demonstrate evidence of reducing occurrence of MD.

  • If you smoke, stop
  • Eat fish at least twice a week
  • Eat green leafy vegetables, yellow vegetables and nuts and seeds
  • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight
